HERITAGE CONSERVATION

Heritage conservation is the process of maintaining and managing change to a heritage asset in a way that sustains and enhance its significance. It bears the marks of our predecessors efforts to sustain life and satisfy their needs. It is that part of surrounding that displays the interaction between people and places through time.

Conserving our heritage is very significant and the generations that follow us are most likely to value them. The Archaeological Survey of India and United Kingdom, United Nations,etc have taken measures in India for conservation of heritage sites. The ASI under the Ministry of Culture is the premier organization for the protection of the cultural heritage of the nation. The organization has a large work force of trained archaeologists, conservators and scientists for conducting research projects, maintenance of ancient monuments and sites. The entire country is divided into four circles. The monuments and sites that received funds from ASI are Taj Mahal, Qutub Minar, Sanchi Stupa and Mathura. ASI protects monuments under the provisions of AMASR Act of 1958. There are more than 3650 ancient Indian monuments as of 2010 that are under ASI projection.

Monuments are important in societies because of their historical, political, memorial, cultural or symbolic significance and the ability to protect them has become increasingly difficult as more tourist arrive to take a look.

Ways to conserve monuments:

We should not write the names on the walls of caves or any other structure.
We should not throw garbage inside the monuments.
We should not spit near the walls.
We must maintain cleanliness.
A physical barrier should be raised so that no one can touch the monument.

There are many more ways to conserve our heritage but it depends on us how seriously we respect this heritage and how beautifully we conserve it for our future generations.
